Your weekend guide
Adventures in Stavanger and beyond January 30th - February 1st 2026
Hi,
This past weekend was beautiful and sunny, albeit COLD. Easing into adventures by checking out Ålgårdhallen and its open play time. The boys had a blast and us parental units relaxed and enjoyed it too. It always strikes me how many places in the world I have yet to see, even in Stavanger and bordering regions. Love it!
This coming weekend has some amazing events lined up. How great that on a random weekend in January, there’s so much happening that you can’t possibly do it all.
If you’re reading this for the first time - welcome! This is my weekly newsletter, sent out every Wednesday (nyhetsbrev på norsk her). My philosophy in life: every place in the world has something exciting happening. I believe there is always something to experience, no matter where you are (in fact, I’m willing to bet I can find something for you no matter where in the world you are reading from*). Sometimes it is big events, other times small experiences that make a weekend memorable. Everything I pick out is something I am considering doing myself, with or without two small children.
These are my tips for things to do in Stavanger and beyond this weekend:
Heads up: often the pages are in Norwegian, but you can always use Google Translate to check them out.
Friday
Sans kids
Dinner with Hulda Garborg: Experience a 5-course dinner based on recipes from Heimestell, a cookbook Hulda Garborg wrote in 1898. Sounds like fun to me. Limited number of seats. From 19:00 to 23:00. Tickets and info here.
LOFT presents: A NIGHT IN THE 90s: DJ, 90s music, fun start to weekend. Free entry. No ticket needed. From 17:00 till closing time. More info here.
Saturday
Family Day at Ullandhaug: Open cafe, fun activities, and farm animals. For the youngest kiddos, there is a dedicated activity trail from 11:00 to 14:00. Free admission. More info here.
2026 Strongman Norwegian Championships: Women and men competing in events such as log lift, deadlift, and Atlas stone. Ok, I realize this is niche, but this is right up my alley (fun fact: there is a photo of me and the world’s strongest man and jolly do I look tiny in comparison). Starts at 11:00. More info here.
Family workshop at Stavanger Kunstmuseum: Let your inner creative come out to play and make your own calendar. As mentioned before, the museum will soon close for renovation, so this is a good chance to check out while it is still open. Free for children and included with an adult ticket. From 11:30 to 14:30. More info here.
Music Play at Sølvberget: Barnas kulturverksted is promising a fun mix of concert and music activities using voice, body, and instruments. For ages 0–6. From 12:30. Free, but ticketed. More info here.
Intro Folk Dance class: The course offers a simple and fun introduction to Norwegian folk dance, led by Ingeleiv Berstad and Olav Christer Rossebø. First session starts at 11:00 (geared towards children), second session 14:00 (for all ages). Free. More info here.
Winter Lights 2026: Outdoors party (so dress accordingly) in the schoolyard with lights and outdoor cinema (from 17:00 to 18:00 for the youngest kiddos and 18:00 Encanto for the older kiddos). Black light disco and foam cannon, plus fun activities. Sounds pretty magical to me! Free, no ticket needed. From 17:00 to 20:00. More info here.
Sans kids
Social pre-run ahead of the AKVA Robust Run: Test the course, train together, and get a feel for the atmosphere (maybe you will be tempted to sign up for the actual run in a couple of weeks?). Free coffee, raffle, and prizes. From 10:00. More info here.
Sunday
20th Anniversary of “Go Outside Day”: DNT is celebrating with nature quiz, activities for children, campfire coziness, and hot dogs while supplies last. Several locations around the region: Gramstad in Sandnes, Randaberg, Sola, Jæren, Egersund and Strand. Free, no ticket needed. More info here (scroll down to enter each location).
Wetlands Day: The World Wetlands Day is celebrated at all 3 of the region’s Wetlands Centers. Fun activities and café. Free. From 11:00 to 16:00. More info for each: Mostun, Orre Friluftshus and Kvassheim Fyr (wow, third mention of this place in 3 weeks!).
This week’s tips
Place I want to try: Sirevåg Fiskerfruen. On my quest for local foods, this place came to my attention. Fresh seafood from the coast to cook yourself or to enjoy in the cute harbor. A bit of a drive, but I can’t think of a more scenic drive around. Can’t wait to try.
A good stop anytime: Buøy Bakeri. Ok not anytime, as it is not open on the weekends (nor the month of July), but oh so worth it. Get the Skjærsgård bread and please request the discontinued San Francisco bread (maybe if enough of us request it they will bring it back).
Hope you are inspired to try some of these things and that you have a great weekend!
Thank you so much for reading my newsletter. My goal is to send this out every Wednesday with my weekend tips (and occasionally weekday ones) for Stavanger and the surrounding area. If you’d like to get it straight to your inbox, hit “subscribe” and feel free to share it with a friend who might need some weekend inspiration.
* If you’re reading this from somewhere outside Stavanger, feel free to challenge me to find something for you :)
